Environmentally Friendly E-Coat Stainless Steel Cold Heading Wire Making an Impact
David Kerr with Metal Resource Solutions reported 2012 was another superb year due largely to sales of their E-Coat Stainless Steel Wire product line.
After years of research and development E-Coat was introduced as an alternative to copper coating as a lubricant on stainless steel cold heading wire. This special layered auburn colored coating was formulated to stay on the wire surface longer than other nonmetallic coatings during multi-die, multi-blow heading operations and long extruded parts.
Customers reported E-Coated stainless steel performed as well as copper coated stainless but unlike copper, environmentally friendly E-Coat is easier and less expensive to remove.
Cold heading operators using E-Coated wire for the first time were are pleased with the results and found it also saves on tool life too. The E-Coat can be applied to stainless grades 304, 304L, 30430 (302HQ), 430, and 410 in diameters ranging from .057” up to .375”.
Kerr pointed out, “for best results when a customer is drawing E-Coated wire before heading, selecting the correct draw die and lubricant is vital.”
